She hovered over her desk in the school room, finishing up some school.

“Ugh! Why does school have to be so…schoolish.” She muttered.

“Sarah Joe? You can be done now.” Her teacher called into the classroom.

“Finally.” She said under her breath.

“Thanks.” She whispered as she walked by.

“Some one should be here to pick you up shortly.” Ms. Jennings told her. Sarah sat on the concrete steps in front of the school and watched her teacher drive away. Then she hummed ‘The ants go marching one by one’ and tapped her fingers on the ground while watching some ants carry a load. Then she dozed off while watching the ants…

“Hey, Ollie! Give me a foot!!” The largest ant called. Sarah knew he was talking to her, so she quickly ran over (it was weird being an ant) and grabbed a piece of the fruit. They walked over the side walk and into the grass.

“Here’s the hole!!” She heard the colony echo each other, All the way to the back of the line. Everyone was moving in lines of three, and then lines of four. Blaring music played ‘The ants go marching’. Just then they came up to a hole. But there was..either ice or glass covering it. This is weird. She thought briefly. “You have to push through it!” She was now a tiny human again, and jumped into the ice. It broke, and she found that she was now on the sidewalk.

“Sarah. Sarah Joe! Wake up.” She looked up to see the big ant leaning over her. His face slowly faded away into a human face.

… She sat up. “Joel? What-what are you doing here?” She rubbed her eyes and stared at her brother. That was the WEIRDEST dream. she thought.

“I’m here to pick you up, sis! You have a Birthday ya know!” He winked and helped her to her feet. Her eyes lit up with excitement and she couldn’t believe that she had forgotten about her own birthday! Then Joel grabbed her back pack and threw it in the back of his truck. “Get in!” He hopped in the blue Ford with her and noisily drove away. They drove the few blocks it was, and then pulled up to their white house. It was on the corner of town so – thankfully – they didn’t have many neighbors. She hopped out of the truck and pulled her backpack out of the back. Joel hid his laughter as he walked inside behind her. She was half way in the house when-

“SURPRISE!!!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!” Everyone yelled. People were hiding everywhere! Behind the couch, in the kitchen, and tons of other places as well!! She gasped and dropped her backpack. Then put her hand over her chest and took a deep breath.
“You guys scared me!” She said with a smile.

They had already eaten a lot of food and stuff, and everyone had left. “Wow,” She said, “that was a lot of presents…and cake.”

“You’re not done yet..” Joel said, heading to his room.

“Oh, dear, NOW I’m worried.” She said, putting a pillow on her lap. He came out with a huge box, all wrapped in wrapping paper. Every year her brother and she would go back and forth, wrapping presents creatively and so that they were hard to open. She was pretty sure he was going to get her back for last year. The only rule was ‘No scissors or knives’. She rolled her eyes, and grabbed it from him. He was smiling hugely, so she was pretty sure he had wrapped it lots. He swiped his brown hair out of his eyes.

“Would you wipe that silly smile off your face!?” She asked impatiently. He smiled bigger, then just gave a crooked grin that was all the worse. She ripped the wrapping paper off and read what the box said. “Bad memories. Do not open.” She snorted. He always put weird jokes and things on hers. She ripped the box open, to find a bunch of stinky tacky glue and Styrofoam peanuts there. She reached through there, holding her breath. Then took out another thing. It was another box, completely wrapped in duck tape. She pulled it apart, then threw some loose tape at him.

She finally got it apart to see that it was a journal/notebook with some pictures of her and him. “Thanks, Joel!” She told her 18 year old brother. He shrugged it off.

She went in her room and got started writing in it. Just when she was about to end it, she heard yelling downstairs. Then a bang. She started to go downstairs, but heard something at her window and ran over there. She saw a guy in a black mask jump quickly in a silver car. Then another guy came out with- oh no! It looked like their safe! It had all their money in it! But her heart froze as she saw the last guy come out of the house. He was dragging Joel behind him. He looked unconscious too. She gasped and sped to the door…but she was too late. They had just drove away. Tears streamed down her face as she realized that her only friend and sibling, was gone. Possibly dead, and that it was her fault. Then her sadness turned to anger and she glared accusingly at the spot where she had last seen the car. She knew one thing for SURE.

She needed a hero, So that’s what she became.
