To Find a Friend.
If everyone here was safe, they wouldn’t be running into their houses, scared all the time. If everyone was nice, they would have made friends with Jenny by now. If everyone wasn’t so scared, they wouldn’t have 8 locks on their doors, and scratch the words: The world’s not safe anymore. But it was true. The world wasn’t safe. It had been the safest place for a long time. It had been…
Jenny sat with her brother in the cabin. She was 15 and he was 18. The world was a safe place, so they had no need for locks on the doors. They were sitting at the table, drinking coffee.
“This coffee is amazing, Kyle!” Jenny told her brother. “How do you make it?”
“Well..” Kyle started, ” you have to get it just right, so that it’s sweet enough! If you put the sugar in too soon after you make it, it will all desolve, but if you wait, then there will be sugar still in the bottom.” He winked. There was a banging on the door and Kyle motioned for Jenny to go out the back door. Then mouthed “I’ll be there soon.” to her. She ran to the back and gently opened the door. Then her heart nearly stopped as she heard Kyle scream, and then everything was quiet. She ran out the back, barefooted, not stopping to check for nails. She had one single candle, and her PJs on still.
She made it to the shelter of a tree and called out his name in the silence, like he would actually hear, like he would actually care. But no answer came.
…That had happened nearly 2 years ago, but to Jenny, it felt like it was yesterday. There would never be a time where she wouldn’t miss Kyle. She sat at the desk inside the school, playing it all back in her mind.
Just then a man with an ugly, odd cloak, burst in the room. He had been waiting outside the school for just the right moment.
He grabbed his arrow, pointing it directly at her, when out of nowhere, a shape shot in the door with a sword and cut the man down. He fell to the ground, nursing his wound. Jenny could see the man who had the sword more clearly now. He word a plain green cloak, and had simply a sword. His cloak’s hood concealed his face, and the rest flowed neatly out behind him as he ran towards her. “Get out the window!” He told her in a low voice, “Don’t bother to open it, just jump!” As he finished saying that, 4 more men strode into the room and he ran to meet them.
Jenny jumped through the window, landing on the hard ground outside. She pulled herself up and looked around, then ran for the woods.
She was joined by the man in the cloak shortly. He seemed mean and mad, but she was pretty sure that he was on her side. He walked up to a small cabin in the middle of the woods. Then brought her inside and looked around cautiously.
“Wh-what’s your name..and..who are you?” Jenny asked, trying to find the exit again. The man lowered his head.
Then, flipping his cloak hood back he said: “You know who I am.”
There before her, stood Kyle, her 20 year old brother. His hair was a tad longer than it used to be, but he still looked pretty much the same.
“K-Ky…Kyle? But it…” She trailed off. He nodded slowly, then pulled up his hood again. She saw a small smile through the darkness of his hood. Then she saw him waver, and put his hand on the wall. He held up his hand. “I’m fine..” He said. Then he crumpled to the floor. “Kyle!” Jenny said, running over to him. He was unconscious, but she didn’t know why. She turned him onto his side and gasped as she saw blood oozing through his shirt. It ran onto the floor. Then she realized, it wasn’t oozing THROUGH his shirt, because there was a hole in his shirt there.
“He was stabbed by one of the men’s swords!” she told herself quietly. He stirred and muttered, and she looked at him to see if he was awake, he wasn’t. She dragged him up onto a cot she found and pulled the hood of his cloak down, then nursed his wound. She was 17 now and could care alright for herself. She cleaned the wound and bandaged it. “That’ll have to do.” She made some coffee, just like Kyle had told her how to so long ago. Then she was aware of a noise in one of the rooms. She quickly grabbed Kyle’s sword, even though she didn’t have the slightest Idea of how to use it. She made her way to the back room, and swung the door open. Inside was a German Shepherd dog, that was nearly 3 feet tall. At first it growled and barked at Jenny, then realized she wasn’t a threat, and wagged his tail at her.
“Hey boy.” She said. He licked her hand and then ran into the living room, and sat down beside Kyle. Then licked his face. “He’ll…be okay.” She told the dog. Then she heard the door open.
“Uh-oh.” She grabbed she sword again. Then realized the man wasn’t an enemy. She put the sword down and went in to meet him.
“Who are you?!” He demanded.
“I’m…Kyle’s sister. Please believe me.” She said, pretty sure that this man wouldn’t. But when the German shepherd came in and wagged his tail to her, he gave in and nodded slowly.
“Ok. Why are you here? And I’m Lucas. But you ..can call me Luke.” He asked.
“Kyle saved me..but he got hurt, bad.” She said, her head down. Luke’s eyes filled with worry and he ran into the living room and over to the cot, where Kyle was. He pulled the hood back and realized that Kyle was unconscious.
Luke’s eyes filled with anger. “Why did you do this!?” He said through clenched teeth.
“I, I didn’t!! The men..in weird cloaks! They did!!!” She said, backing away. Then she walked over to Kyle and Luke, and crouched down beside her brother. His head was hot with fever and she ran to get a cloth.
It was a week later, and with some of Luke’s expert care, Kyle was doing better.. by just a little bit. Jenny walked over to her brother and sat down on the floor beside him. He was reading a book, but put it down when she came.
“What’s up?” He asked, turning slightly to see her better, then wincing at the pain.
“It’s time to change your bandage.” She said, with no hint of humor. He took a deep breath and Luke came over. Then he pulled Kyle into a sitting position and slowly started unwrapping the bandage. He got it all the way undone and Jenny got him the clean bandage. And the stuff to clean the wound. His wound still looked awful, so they had to clean it every couple of days. Kyle got the Hydrogen proxide and got ready to dump it in. This was the part that Jenny hated the most. She put her arms around her brother to keep him from lashing out and held him tightly. He struggled and nearly screamed as the proxide was dumped in the wound, cleaning it out and hurting like awful. By the time Kyle was done struggling, Luke already had the bandage on again. Luke pulled Kyle back into his laying position and Kyle stayed there, shaking. Pain shone in his eyes and he was breathing quickly in and out. Luke walked over to him and put a hand on his shoulder. Kyle fell asleep quickly.
It had been about a month now and Kyle was up and walking, just a little bit. From time to time, he had severe pain and had to stay in bed for a while, but he was walking a little bit still. He had been watching Luke training Jenny to become a Ranger. Because that’s what Kyle and Luke were…Rangers. They were good- even amazing- with a bow, and Kyle was unique because he fought with a sword also. They wore green cloaks, to help them blend in with their surroundings. Jenny was to be a Ranger now. She needed a hero, so that’s what she became. That’s what Ranger’s were: Heroes.
