“What?” She yelled, as the F.B.I agent, Kirk, put his hand on her shoulder. She was hugging her knees, as tears rolled down her face and she swallowed.

“We’re trying to find your brother.” He said, calmly.

“Sure.” She mumbled, biting her top lip and turning away from the agent.

“Jami, we need your help still.” He said. She glared at him with sad eyes. Her brother was missing, and he was the only family she had. The F.B.I was trying to find him, but couldn’t. Jami looked around and put her knees down. Then pulled out a photograph she had been cradling, and gently handed it to the Kirk.

“This..” She started, her voice cracking, “This is..is what…. he…Jake….looked-” Then she burst into tears, and stormed out of the room. She saw an eagle outside as she ran by the window.

“She’s taking it rough.” The agent said to himself, studying the photograph.ย  Even though this happened often with kids getting very distressed, it was still hard on him. The photo was of a boy, about 16 years old, Jake, leaning up against a barn support. Jami, his sister, was standing on the other side of the support. They were both smiling.

Jake had mysteriously disappearedย  a few days ago, at night, and no one knew where he was.

“Hey Kirk?” One of the other agents said, looking around and motioning for Kirk to come over. He walked over.

“What is it, Hal?” He asked, taking a deep breath.

“Do you want me and Jim to go over and ask the neighbors if they saw anything?” Hal was a younger man, who was eager to get things done.

“Sure. But wait a….actually, go ahead…I think we have enough others here. After you do though, come right back here and tell me what you figured out.” He said.

“K, sure.” Hal headed out the door to the next door, with Jim.

Jami sat on the couch with her chin in her hand, her pinky half in her mouth. Jake was her only friend, her brother. He was her hero, and he was gone now. She was alone…all alone in the big world. He had been kidnapped or killed. She sobbed and sobbed. She had heard people say that they ‘cried until they couldn’t anymore.’ but that wasn’t happening to her. She didn’t think there would be a ‘couldn’t anymore’.

She lifted her head, her eyes big, when she heard someone say something. She didn’t think it could possibly be what she thought, but she had thought she heard something about ‘we’ve got a lead’. Before she knew it, her feet had brought her into Jake’s room again, and she was with all of the F.B.I agents, trying to look around them. They were all around a computer. “Someone reported a tail light flashing mysteriously, on fourth street, Takeenville. Hurry, let’s get someone there.” Kirk said. Jami drew in a breath quickly and hope filled her eyes. Kirk gave her a small nod, that was barely noticeable.

They were driving down the road toward the car. There it was. Jami was in a building beside it. There were F.B.I agents in disguise all around. They pulled up to the car and motioned for him to pull over. Surprisingly, he did. They walked up to him, and asked him to put his hands out the window. He didn’t. “This is Kirk. Close in.” Kirk whispered into his radio. He pulled his gun, and moved up. An eagle was circling above.

***

Jami watched as they got the guy out of his car. He didn’t look like a guy who would kidnap someone, but she watched very eagerly as the agents looked in the backseat. Then Kirk looked in her direction and shook his head. Then someone popped the trunk. Jami gasped as she saw Jake there…in the trunk. He hopped out, wiping dust off his jeans.

***

Kirk watched as Jake got out of the trunk, He was dirty, but didn’t look hurt. “Hello, son. Are you hurt?” He asked, walking up to the boy. “No, I’m fine. Thank you, sir. I wasn’t sure….” He trailed off as his eyes got big and he looked behind Kirk. Jami walked out of the building. Jake’s eyes filled with tears as he ran toward his sister.

“Jami!” He said, as she ran toward him. They met in the middle and embraced. Jami cried as she hugged her brother. “Jake, Jake. I thought..” She sobbed, her voice muffled by his shirt.

“Shhh, it’s alright now. We’re together.” He squeezed her tight, his tears running freely. He tucked his chin further over her shoulder, and she pushed her head closer to his chest. Kirk watched as the two hugged, and the minutes tugged by, and they stayed together. Jake finally leaned back and held her hands, looking into her deep blue watery eyes. He smiled sadly. “I love you.” He said. “I love you too.” She said back. They embraced once more.

They had both realized that they couldn’t live without each other.

The eagle flew away into the trees then.
