“And they all lived happily after! THE END!” She finished triumphantly. Tanor her Dragon snorted, wanting to hear more. Riley upturned her palms, “I don’t have anymore! That’s the end of the book!” She pet Tanor on his nose and he lowered his head, disappointed. Riley lay down on her back and closed her eyes, taking a deep breath of the misty air around her. The waterfall’s comforting noise swam to her ears and she sighed thoughtfully. Then she drifted off to sleep. Riley woke up in the middle of the night on the tree by the waterfall still. She leaned over the edge of the tree and inhaled deeply. The air was more fresh up here, the moon and stars seemed brighter, and she felt free.  Tanor leaned over her, interrupting her moment. water dripped off of his wet nose and onto her chin. “Hey.” Riley whispered, then smiled at her three year old dragon. She stood up and stretched, then headed back to the hut to find Mason.  He had just come out of the house with his brownish/black coat, dark jeans, and black hunting boots on. She laughed to herself, thinking of the time he had tried to scare her by dressing in a black cloak and carrying a bow around. Mason walked to her and handed her a jacket. Mason was Riley’s brother.

“It’s gonna get cold tonight.” he told her. She mimicked his words in a weird voice and then gave him a look that said ‘obviously’. He shrugged back. Then he whistled two high notes and 3 low ones, then waited 5 seconds and did another low one. Riley looked from tree to tree, trying to find something hidden there. Then to her left one of the tree branches seemed to have wings and flew toward them, leaving the real tree branch swaying in the wind. Mason’s dragon flew gracefully down to him and landed beside him. It’s rusty red colored scaled were bright compared to Tanor’s dull blue ones, but somehow Streak (Mason’s Dragon) could still blend in great. They hopped onto their dragons and flew into the trees, avoiding the swamps. Where the Jaguars lived. …but these weren’t ordinary Jaguars. They were giant beasts that ran through the forest, playing with each other. But they didn’t just ‘play’ with people. They killed them. After taking them captive. They looked like Jaguars. Then whenever their evil master wanted them to become monsters, he would inject them with liquid from multiple bottles that were hidden somewhere. But only he knew where. The jaguars never hurt anyone, but monsters did. There were some forty bottles, and about 10 monsters. The evil Master could use whichever bottles he wanted to make them bigger or smaller. Not all haunted places are houses. The swamp was what a lot of people would call haunted. So Mason and Riley always avoided the swamps.

After riding for about 10 minutes, they finally came to the open spot in the trees and landed noiselessly on two branches. Mason pulled out his bow quietly and strung it, then put an arrow on the string. Tanor hopped from branch to branch until he was close enough for Riley to accurately use her weapon: a spear. Mason’s eyes darted from side to side as his grip on the bow handle tightened and loosened. Then he saw it. A small doe right in the corner of the open meadow. He pulled all the way back on the string and aimed straight at the deer. But right as he was about to hit it, it fell to the ground, dead. He looked closer, and saw that it had a spear through it. Then he caught a movement to it’s right and looked to see a huge buck there. He pulled back and release fluently and the buck went straight to the ground.

“Good job!” He praised his sister. They both flew down and the dragon’s grabbed their captured prey, then they flew victoriously through the trees.

Lord Martin laughed evilly. He would get his Jaguars together tomorrow night. They won’t have as good of a catch tomorrow. He thought, with a smile. Then he spun around, his shoulder length dark brown hair swirling.

Riley hopped off of Tanor and told him that he could go back into the woods again to sleep. But instead he crawled up on the roof, aware that danger was in store for Mason and Riley.

Riley woke up the next morning and found Mason in the kitchen, cooking some hamburgers.

“Mmmm…boy, does it smells good in here!!” She said, taking a deep breath of the savory aroma.

After they were done with that, they went outside to find Tanor and Streak up on top of the roof sleeping.

“I have to get some water for the barrel.” Mason told Riley.

“Ooh, I’ll come too. Tanor,” She said, clearing her throat, “Could use some exercise.” He hopped up quickly and jumped down off the roof. He was getting a bit chubby, and Riley couldn’t help but tease him. She scratched his neck and hopped on. Then Mason hopped up onto Streak and they rode off into the trees.

They landed next to the waterfall and Mason hopped off of Streak to walk down to the water. “So, did you sleep good?” Riley said, with a yawn.

Lord Martin made a pitiless smile. His monsters huddled around him, hopping eagerly, waiting for those two words. “Get them.” He commanded. Then they burst out of the trees with a monstrous roar.

“I slept….alright. How about you?” Mason asked, leaning down to get his bucket full of water. He glanced in the reflection and saw a blur of something. Then another.

“Oh…al-”

“Riley, hurry and get in the water. Just do it!” Mason commanded her, but as he thought, she started to turn around. He rolled his eyes and grabbed her. Then pushed her into the water. She swam to the top then away from there. Then Riley lifted her head out of the water, just enough to see the huge monsters tramp out of the woods. Mason jumped in the water and swam the other way, but the monsters quickly caught up and grabbed him out in their giant clawed hands. Riley gasped as they pulled him out of the water, and ran off, just like that.

“NO!” She whispered, digging her fingernails into her hands. “Mason..”

She walked back to the bank of the river and sat on a large rock. She just sat there, huge sobs shaking her body. Then she looked up and sniffed as she saw a familiar shadow come over her. It was Streak. His eyes looked watery, and he nudged her shoulder, asking her if that had really just happened. She was pretty sure he would have gone after Mason if he had thought that there was a chance of getting him back. She hugged the dragon and he wrapped his neck around her. Tanor watched from a distance. Then he scooped up Mason’s compass that he had dropped on the ground and slipped it into his saddlebags.

Riley dragged her feet into the house and sat down in a chair in the kitchen. She was so mad that she threw a kitchen fork at the window, and it broke. Glass went everywhere and she just lay on the floor, sobbing. Why did this Happen!? She wondered. She didn’t know why it had to happen, or if she could ever get him back. But she would try. She knew that much. She would try. She needed a hero, so that’s what she would become.

Riley was sitting at a desk, in what looked like a school room, when all of the sudden, she had the feeling that she had to go search for someone. Mason. She ran out the door and into the woods. She had a candle now, that lit her way through the smoke and ashes. She saw a man standing in the woods.

“Hello, Sir? Can you help me find my brother? He’s about this-”

“I’m sorry, I can’t help you.” The old man said, then walked away.

Then she was in the graveyard. She kept thinking about the sentence “not all haunted places are houses”.  The word ‘missing’ was imprinted in her mind. She pictured it going out all over the country in newspapers. She pictured two girls in knee deep water dancing, and then the water drained out and someone whispered “MISSING” IN a hoarse voice. Then she was in the graveyard again. She saw a box behind a gravestone that said “Bad Memories. Do not open.” Obviously, she opened it. Inside was a single photo of a gravestone. On it was printed “here lies a man who is not from this world.”

She sat up suddenly in her bed, breathing very hard. “I will find you Mason…I WILL!!!” She declared.

Mason pulled himself off the ground. His hair was wet and muddy, and he was leaning over a tree root. Where was he? What had happened? Now he remembered.

“On your feet prisoner!” A gruff voice said, pulling Mason to his feet. He was lightheaded and his left arm was throbbing. But other than that, he thought he was alright.

Mason sat in the camp, his hands tied behind his back. Everyone else ate their warm soup, but he just sat out by a tree with his back to it. His stomach growled, but he said nothing. Then he listened to what everyone was saying. He only heard one sentence out of all of them. “Mirrors are secret passages to fantastic worlds guarded by creatures called ‘The Ferrymen.” He squinted, trying to decipher the words. Then he realized it. That was how to get to the jars that were injected into the Jaguars! If he could make it to them, then he could- then his thoughts were cut off as a cramp ran down his left arm, feeling like someone three times his strength and size was squeezing it. “Agh!” He whispered. He wondered where Riley was right now. Or Streak.

Riley wandered through the woods, trying to see where to go.. But she couldn’t. Sweat dripped down into her eyes, stinging them and making her eyes water even more. She was leading Tanor, because he was also very hot and sweaty. Riley called out his name in the silence, as if he would actually hear, as if they would actually care. Then she saw a sign. It said: Here be faeries. Riley dragged herself farther along the path, trying to see where to go. Then she saw her reflection. Out of the middle of nowhere. She walked toward it curiously, when all of the sudden, she just..walked through it!! Then she was in a cave! But Tanor was still with her. “Where am I..?” She wondered out loud. Tanor stopped suddenly and Riley turned around to see why. He had a butterfly on his nose. It was bright blue, and pretty soon one landed on her too. Then Streak suddenly appeared too in the cave with them, and they continued walking …into the unknown.

Mason rubbed his ropes on the rough tree bark, trying to loosen them more. Everyone else was in their tents now, and he had been trying to get the ropes loose so that he could find his way back. He knew he was in this ‘fantastic world’, that was NOT fantastic to him…and had to get out, and back to Riley.

He finally got them loose enough that he could pull them the rest of the way off. Then he crept out of the camp and toward the woods. Once he made it there, he broke into a run and kept running.

Mason reached a cave entrance, and saw a scary creature in front of it. Two of them. He ducked behind a tree. He had to create a diversion for them. He had it!

Mason climbed high into the oak tree, ready to carry out his plan. He had a stick that he had sharpened on a rock. It was pitiful, but it would have to do. He aimed at his target, and BAM! He threw the large stick/limb at the creature. He was almost positive it was just a normal person under the large ‘uniform’. The man was hit by the stick and his companion ran to him as he shouted angrily. Mason grabbed a vine out of a neighboring tree and swung to the ground, then noiselessly slipped into the cave. Then he looked to his left, and saw a bunch of bottles there! Of all colors. He pressed his hand against the wall on both sides of them and then pushed hard. The wall actually came towards him, as he thought it might, and he moved out of the way, leaving it to crash into the bare wall, destroying the bottles and leaving a solid wall in the middle of the cave. Then he nodded and continued on.

Riley sat down on the dark cave floor. Tanor lay down beside her. He looked at her questioningly. “It is cunning, it is brave, it is brutal, it is relentless..and it was hunting him.” She told Tanor. Streak was standing by himself a little way ahead. He had his eyes open wide, looking around. His ears were both turned toward the front of the cave. Then he put them back with happiness and ran forward. Riley tilted her head sideways, confused. Then Tanor raised his head and made a little noise in his throat, then ran toward Streak. Riley got up, and walked forward cautiously. She could now hear footsteps. Then she saw it. It was a person in the cave, jogging toward her. He looked slightly familiar.. but..could it be? “You know who I am..” Mason said with a smile, pulling his hood back. Then they ran to each other and embraced.

“Mason! I was SO worried!!” Riley sobbed. He squeezed tighter. Mason’s eyes filled with tears and soon Riley’s sweat shirt was soaked. Tanor and Streak looked at each other happily and smiled. Then they walked over to their masters, and pushed up against their owners. They were included in a group hug. Everyone was together again. And they were happy.
