The Effort.

JC was 13 years old, with dark hair and an adventurous mindset. She was an only child that lived in the city. She had a dog and a cat. Her dog’s name was Snip. She was a red and white Border Collie. JC had won a prize for the best behaved dog. She was hangingΒ  up the trophy, when she heard a scratching noise on her door. “Come on in, Snip!” She said. The door creaked open and Snip pranced in the room, and walked to JC’s side, leaning her head on her owner’s lap. JC was going to a slumber party and Snip knew it. ” I have to leave soon, Snip…. you know that,” JC told Snip, scratching her behind her ears. JC grabbed some things, and messily tossed them in her backpack. Then she zipped it shut, fluffed up Snip’s doggy bed, and walked out of her room.

“Okay mom, so Snip’s dog treats are on the table beside my bed, and she gets 1/3 of a can of dog food, and you HAVE to sing her International Harvester every night, cause remember, it’s her favorite song!” “I kn-” “Oh ya, and you have to give her that old squeaky toy when she goes to bed, or else she’ll wake you up for it in the middle of th-” “JC!” “Yes?” JC asked her mom, “Calm down! Snip will be JUST FINE!!!! I know how to take care of her, now get out that door, you’re gonna be late!” her mom said, with a smile and a finger towards the front door. “Okay!” JC said, hugging her mom goodbye. “I love you! Bye! See you in a couple days!” JC stepped out the door. Walking to the shed, she got her bike. Then she started riding down the sidewalk, towards her friends house. Everything’s going to be fine. She thought. But something inside her told her that something major, was about to change…….

Ding dong. “I’ll get it!” JC’s friend, Jami said. Jami ran to the door. Her other friend, Randy, was there. He was a tall boy with big glasses and bushy eyebrows. “Hi,” he said, standing outside the door, “Is JC here?” He asked, pointing to her bike that lay on the porch. “I saw her bike….” “Ya, she’s here, Why?” Jami asked Randy. “I just wanted to talk to you guys a minute!” he replied, leaning up next to the doorway. “Well, I guess you could, but you-” “GREAT!!!!! I’m glad to hear it!” He exclaimed, bursting in the doorway, tracking dirt every where. Jami rolled her eyes and turned around. “She’s up here!” Jami said, walking up the stairs.”

“So ya! That’s what I want to be when I grow up! I could be a very smart scientist! I would find all sorts of Microscopic bugs and plants and things! What do you want to do when you grow up, JC?” Randy said without taking a single breath. “I want to be a vet! Or work to help animals” JC replied. “Indeed.” He said back. “Or just rescue dogs and rehabilitate them and stuff! I just think it would be cool to help animals!” JC said again. “What’s Rebilitate mean?” Randy asked. “Rehabilitate. It means to umm… help the animal and try to help it get over it’s problems, I think.”

“Ya, He like TOTALLY wasn’t listening to a WORD you said!” Jami told JC. “He was like ‘ya, uhuh, yep’ It was pretty funny!!!!!” Jami went on. “Hey, now, don’t be too hard on him…..” JC told Jami, “but…. it WAS pretty funny! πŸ˜€ ” She said, again.Β  “See, I know he wasn’t listening, because he used the word ‘indeed’, like, 5 times!” Jami said again. “You counted?!”JC said, giving a gentle smack to her friends shoulder. Ring, ring….. Ring ring…..Ring ri- “Hello!” Jami’s mom said, downstairs. “Yes, hi, Hayley!” JC looked at Jami. Hayley was JC’s mom. Why would she be calling? JC thought. “What? Oh NO!!!!” I’ll have her come right away…ya! Okay! Bye!” Jami’s mom hung up the phone. “JC! Come down stairs right away, dear!” JC and Jami looked at each other curiously and ran downstairs. “What’s wrong????” JC asked. “I don’t know honey! Your mom wants you to come home right away, though. Jami, can you help JC get her stuff in the car. I think we’ll have to postpone the sleepover. Sorry, girls, but whatever is wrong, it sounded very serious, I’ll drive you over. Jami, get JC’s stuff in the car. JC, please put your bike in the back of the car. I’ll be ready in a minute”

They pulled up to JC’s house. JC grabbed her stuff and hopped out of the car. Jami put her bike in the shed, while JC got the mail and brought her stuff inside. JC looked at the mail. A note lay in the mailbox on the top and JC had a feeling that it wasn’t put there by the mailman. It said: ‘We’re just kids, we aren’t supposed to be heroes.’ What could that mean? She wondered. When she walked in the house, she realized that all the lights were off. “Mom??? Dad?” JC said into the empty house, “Are you here?” She walked into the kitchen then noticed a note on the fridge.

Me and your dad are at the police station.

Come as quick as you can. We need to talk

to you about some things.

Mom

What? I’ll go grab Snip real quick. JC thought, as she ran to her room. She burst open the door. Snip was no where to be seen! There was caution tape in the doorway, and glass all over the floor! JC ducked under the cation tape. The window’s glass had been busted too. As JC walked toward the window, she felt a thick liquid come in contact with her foot, through her sock. She looked at the floor and at her red stained sock………one word flashed through her head…..Blood……

She raced down the side walk, the wind speeding by her face. A thousand thoughts flew through her mind. But two in particular: What happened to Snip? and I NEED to get to the police station. JC sped across the cross walk and sharply turned down the other side walk. Then she finally pulled her bike up to the police station. She just dropped her bike on the side walk in her hurry. She jogged into the station and told the man behind the counter who she was. Then she jogged to a room in the back. “Mom? Dad? What happened? Where’s Snip? Is she okay?” JC asked all the questions at once. “We don’t know, Honey! We just know that someone broke through your window today, after you left, and took Snip! I’m sorry, darling!”

She was going to do it…. she was going to sneak out. She walked out the door and pulled her tablet out of her pocket. She looked at Google maps and saw a large figure at the outskirts of town. Then she stuck her tablet back in her backpack and hopped on her bike….. she was going to find Snip……..

Here it is. She thought. An eight foot tall fence stood, lining the building. She knew that she had to climb the fence. She reached in her backpack and pulled out her gun. A large red sign said, Private Property, No Trespassing. As JC reached up to grab the fence, a piece of paper fell out of her pocket. She read it…. ‘We’re just kids, we aren’t supposed to be heroes.’ Did this mean that she wasn’t supposed to be a hero as in…. saving her dog? She was GOING to save her dog. She climbed over the giant fence and looked at the large building…buildings. She walked toward the buildings and at the first one, she quietly peeked in the door. Two guards stood at the entrance, guarding the gate. A man with a large crate on a cart wheeled in the door, a growling noise was coming from inside the crate. The guards stepped away, letting the man through. Hmm….. JC thought….

She sneaked through the gate, holding tightly to the bottom of the cart. The cart turned down a long hall lined with dogs on both sides. German shepherds, Huskies, Saint Bernard dogs, and anything else you can think of. JC quietly stepped off and slipped down another hallway, that was also lined with dogs. But Snip was nowhere to be seen. “Snip!” JC said quietly. “Snip?!” She said again. “Well, well! If it isn’t little miss JC HERSELF!” Someone said from behind. JC spun around, immediately recognizing the voice of a past competitor at a dog trial that Snip had been entered in. JC was starting to fit all the puzzle pieces together. She ran down the hallways with Hector, JC’s past competitor on her tail. JC kept running, from hall, to hall, to hall! Wait! She thought, Was that….SNIP! She turned around and sped toward her barking dog. Snip had a cut on her head and was bleeding a little. Hector was catching up and JC whipped her gun off of her back. Aiming carefully, she shot the lock and busted the door open. Snip ran past JC and leaped on top of Hector. Then she turned around and ran to JC licking her all over. JC took her gun out again and started letting out all of the other dogs that were locked in cages. She heard footsteps coming down the hall and tried to go faster. She got to a cage with a pup in it, one to small and weak to walk. Snip grabbed it by the scruff and carried it with her. The other dogs ran toward the oncoming enemies running towards them and stalled them, while JC kept shooting locks. She was at the end of the second hall now and the foe had almost reached her. The dogs scrambled through the men’s legs, causing them to fall over. JC almost smiled. Okay, half done with this hall….. one and a half halls to go! Bang, bang, bang, JC was starting to get the hang of this….. 7 more dogs to go, Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang , two more to go! Bang BANG!!!! All the dogs were free. Now they had to get out of there! A German Shepherd and a Saint Bernard took the two guards down and JC ran out of the building. The dogs started digging under the fence and realized that it was quite deep. JC helped too, the men were right behind them. There! JC squeezed through the hole under the fence and and the rest of the dogs followed. JC grabbed the pup and gently pulled it under the fence. There, now all the dogs were – WAIT! Snip was laying on the other side. The men had knocked her out. They were kicking her and beating her. No! JC thought. She carefully aimed and shot the man’s hand to keep him from hurting her dog! Then she crawled back under the fence and pulled her dog out. Then she grabbed her bike and left her backpack lay on the ground. She hoisted Snip onto her lap and zoomed off. It was after midnight and JC heard sirens. Her mom had probably gotten worried when she figured out that JC was gone. JC rode to the police station and ran in, the other dogs jumping on the door. “Sir! Can you uh.. help me get my dog to the vet! There are some people who had all these dogs in that building and I rescued the dogs and MY dog was stolen by them and PLEASE just help me sir!” “Whoa there!” the man said. “Slow down.”

3 weeks later

“Hey there! I’m home!” JC’s dad hollered. All the dogs screeched through the living room, including JC and Snip. “Do you have the collars?!” JC asked, looking in the bags. “Yup! All 13 of them!” He answered “I’m glad we were able to get rid of as many of those dogs as we did!” He added, “Guess what?” JC told her dad, “What?” He asked. “The vet said that Snip’s bandage can come off this week!” Woof! Snip said. The little puppy, Carri, came bustling in the room, yapping. JC leaned down and all the dogs came running to her. She gave them all a big hug! “Well, lets put their collars on, already!” her dad said. Then all the dogs let out a big ROOF!

She is the one doing it! I’m sure she wouldn’t mind if you do it just for fun! Next time she does it, you’ll have to join next time (Maybe you’ll be on my team! πŸ˜‰ ) oh and her post about it will probably be like the second post down or something!
