The Horse’s Pasture Life… (+lots of pics)

Why the long face? Maybe some horse pictures would cheer you up!

We went to pasture a while back (where a lot of our horses are) and I got quite a few pictures! I decided that since it’s been QUITE a while since I made a REAL post, I would do one now! 😉

So why do we put our horses out to pasture?

So the horses go out in this pasture throughout the summer and then come back to our place in about September or October… November if we’re lucky! 😉 Now, when I say I like them being out to pasture, I don’t say this because I don’t like them being at our place…but when they can be out on grass, it is not only WAY better for their health, but also is great for them to be able to have that kind of space and nature…and a lot less expensive. We have one horse that gets respiratory problems when she eats too much hay, so we can’t use her too much unless she’s out to pasture (she doesn’t eat grain), so it’s good to get her out to pasture. We also have Huddy (the flea-bitten gray(a color)), who is pretty old (24ish?), and she is way healthier when she can be on grass out to pasture. So there are way more pluses than negatives to having them in pasture. And don’t worry, we always make sure they have access to plenty of water when they’re out to pasture. So just a few reasons why we like having them out there!!!

Pros and Cons about Pasture:

Pros:

  • It helps them be healthier.
  • It’s less expensive.
  • They love the space to run around and exercise.
  • If any of them bully each other in small pens, a lot of time they won’t in pasture because they have more space.
  • They absolutely love it!

Cons:

  • They get cockle burrs more easily.
  • They sometimes aren’t as easy to catch and pet (the younger ones) after being out to pasture.
  • They have to be picked up and dropped off. (which isn’t usually a huge big deal)
  • We sometimes get calls saying the horses got out of the pasture, and we have to go catch them and lead them back in! XD (that one is actually pretty funny most of the time! Only after the fact, of course.)
  • We have to check the water to make sure it doesn’t run out.
  • When they start running out of green grass, we need to bring hay.
  • We have to make sure they have a salt block out there so they get their minerals. (which we do that when they’re home too, but we have to haul it out to pasture on the fourwheeler when they’re out there. )

But see, even the cons aren’t always cons! The fact that we have to bring them hay when they run out of grass is more of a fact then a bad thing… I mean, it’s not hard! 😉  It’s fine. I love having the horses out to pasture, and even though it may seem that there are more cons than pros, the pros even out and make it all perfect, and I love having them out there! But when they’re at my house, I can play with them and ride them easier! 😉

Now that I’ve bored you to death with information you probably already knew and didn’t care to hear, do you want to see some slightly more interesting pictures???

Do you???

Are you ready? Here we go!!!

So, we first headed out to the main pasture just to check up on everyone. This is when we were first approaching the horses on the fourwheeler!
